About Daniel Perantoni

Daniel Perantoni, Tuba-Provost Professor, Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University. Dan or “Mr. P” as his students call him is a legendary tuba artist, teacher, and pedagogue as well as a trailblazer in a variety of genres including work as a solo recitalist, chamber musician, jazz musician, and instrument design. He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the executive board of T.U.B.A. A true legion of former students holds prestigious positions in major performing ensembles and music schools around the world. Their success is the best testimony to his abilities as a teacher, mentor, and friend. He is cited as a “tubist’s tubist,” featuring his playing a “lyrical, clear, and singing tone, along with his impeccable musical style.” Daniel Perantoni has been a featured artist in Carnegie Hall, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Spoleto Festival U.S.A., the Adelaide Festival in Australia, the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, the Montreux Brass Congress in Switzerland,
and recently as a soloist throughout Europe and Asia. He is a founding member of the Summit Brass, Symphonia, the St. Louis Brass Quintet, the Matteson-Phillips Tubajazz Consort, and has released numerous solo albums and chamber music CD’s.

About Loving' and a Swingin'

Dan Perantoni has long been considered at the very top of the tuba world, with no reason to ever go out of his comfort zone. Well, that’s not how Mr. P is wired.
Lovin’ and Swingin’ is his third jazz venture and in my opinion, his best. At times, when a famous “classical” player chooses to do a jazz project, the results can be mixed. However, Dan had a plan – select great tunes, get the best arranger, put together a top-notch band of jazz players and come ready to play! Enjoy…

About the music…

Opening with In Your own Sweet Way, the band swings from the start with Dan taking the first solo. Rusty is up next on vibes setting up a seamless trading with Dan.
Allee’s arrangement of My Funny Valentine is a fresh take on a beloved tune. Dan begins with a soulful melody and solo followed by Rob Dixon’s beautiful tenor work.
Makin’ Whoopee is perfect for a duo setting with Allee.
Dan’s long history with Dixieland bands pays off with his walking bass line work. Allee’s versatility is on full display as he visits the stride style of Fats Waller and Art Tatum.
The band navigates the well-known Stella By Starlight in 7/4 time. Yes, it works!
You’ll hear the whole band blow on this one, going between 7/4 and 4/4.
You Are The One is a gorgeous ballad written by Dan, for his lovely wife Judy.
Their love is obvious in his performance.
Perantoni’s love of Bill Evans led us to Waltz For Debbie and Steve’s arrangement captures a playful version with a killer piano solo – the trio shines.
Perantoni plays My Foolish Heart beautifully with another stunning piano solo by Steve Allee.
Wave, the Jobim classic is masterfully arranged featuring Dan and Rob playing a soli section, followed by solo work by tuba and tenor with vibes, guitar, piano and drums adding just the right feel.
The great Oscar Peterson, one of Dan’s favorites, inspired this version of Tenderly. After the luscious duo intro, the band digs into a thick shuffle groove all the way out.
Stardust was his mom’s favorite tune and he fondly remembers his Dad’s beautiful rendition on trombone. Dan’s performance pays a beautiful tribute to them.
The communication between Steve and Dan is special on this Hoagy Carmichael masterpiece.
Yatra –Ta takes the band on a rhythmical journey, featuring some great solo rides and Dan’s funky side. Mr. P’s dance moves were seen on the playback.
That’s All is a fitting closer to this joyous project. After Dan’s solo work, Sandy takes a great guitar solo, with vibes and tenor adding color.
If this is your last project Dan, you went out in style… and swinging. Congrats!

Steve Houghton

Dedication

The Album is dedicated to the memory of my parents-Bleach and Evelyn Perantoni who provided me with the tools, love, and support for my musical career.
Dad was a jazz trombone player and always wanted me to go more in that direction. Mom's favorite tune was Stardust. I can still hear Bleach's fantastic solo with his band "Bleach Perantoni and the Five Aces"!
